We’re not saying it is, but if the economy is tanking the leadership in most states will find some reason to brag about its economy. Some brag when there is nothing to brag about. The bottom-line, however, is all states contribute a certain percentage to the nation’s economy.

The PIA Western Alliance state of California — despite its wildfire problems, threats to tax billionaires on time at 5% and a shrinking population fleeing the state for this reason or that — has the biggest share of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP).

A huge tech industry and a super large population has the Golden State’s contribution to the GDP sitting at 14.5% of the U.S. GDP. California is one of the top four states and is joined by New York, Texas and Florida. Combined, the four states have over a third of the gross domestic product in the United States.

Vermont’s share of the GDP is 0.2% and sits at the very bottom of the GDP share list.

Here are the numbers for the 10 PIA Western Alliance states:

Alaska — 0.2%

Arizona — 1.9%

California — 14.5%

Hawaii — 0.4%

Idaho — 0.4%

Montana — 0.3%

Nevada — 0.9%

New Mexico — 0.5%

Oregon — 1.1%

Washington — 3.0%
