Americans Satisfied with Their Lives

Posted By Administration, Monday, February 10, 2020

A new Gallup poll says 90% of us are satisfied with our personal lives. That tops the previous record established in 2003. It was 88%. The key term used in the survey is “personal life.” What Gallup didn’t do is go too deeply into a definition of exactly what “personal life” means.

The survey is called Mood of the Nation. With that, here’s what Gallup found:

65% — or 2 out of 3 — say they have a very high level of satisfaction

25% say they are just somewhat satisfied with their personal lives

Then Gallup breaks it down a bit:

76% of those with higher incomes — $100,000 or more — said they are very satisfied

Married Republicans — 95% — is the group with the highest satisfaction level

80% of Republicans — married or not — say they are very satisfied

Just 56% of Democrats are very satisfied with their personal lives

When it comes to men, women and races:

67% of men are very satisfied with their lives

63% of women are very satisfied

67% of whites are very satisfied

59% of non-whites are very satisfied

Even though the 90% is a record number, Gallup admits that there has been a bit of a variation in personal life satisfaction since the company started this survey in 1979. The average from then to now — however — is 83%. And by the way, satisfaction tends to walk lock step with how well the economy is doing.

It is doing pretty well right now and leads to the last point and that is the current financial position of those surveyed:

59% say they are in a better financial position now than they were a year ago

74% say they are optimistic that things will continue along those lines this year
