Employers — Small Percentage Ready for a 2nd Wave

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Willis Towers Watson has been talking with employers about employees returning to work. Their survey of employers has good news and bad.

    * The good news — 71% say they’ve put safety policies in place for worker return
    * The bad news — just 32% are prepared for a second wave of COVID-19

The survey is the second work safety focus done by the company in three months. The results are quite revealing:

    * 39% say workplace safety is their top priority
    * In April that figure was 27%
When it comes to making sure the workplace is safe:

    * 56% have reconfigured workspaces to give 6’ distances
    * 76% are providing protective equipment like masks
    * 57% are staggering shifts and breaks

Those employers taking those steps:

    * 73% will require masks in public locations
    * 24% will require masks at all times
    * 18% will test employees for acute infection before they return to work
    * 67% have a process to deal with workplace exposure

Companies are also concerned about at-risk employees and older workers whose jobs cannot be done remotely:

    * 44% have created more flexibility in the position
    * 50% are planning to take similar actions
    * 38% are assigning new roles to at risk employees

By the way, a year ago just 11% of workers could telecommute. Today that figure is 60%.
